Late Arrival For Amarillo

Well, how fickle music fans can be with old school crooner Tony Christie only now gaining his first number one single in the UK charts with (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, following comedian Peter Kay's use of it for his Comic Relief contribution (raising thousands for the charity). With his greatest hits album at number two in the charts, Christie has never been more popular in his homeland despite being mainly successful in other European countries such as Germany for most of his career - a feat/fate shared by that other giant of the music industry, er, David Hasselhoff.

When Amarillo was first released in 1971, it only reached number eighteen in the UK but remained in the top spot in Spain for almost six months. However, with Peter Kay's Comic Relief video of him miming along to Amarillo featuring an assortment of British celebrities (plus the comedian's use of it in his live shows and TV show Phoenix Nights), Christie has been catapulted back into the spotlight with a song released thirty-four years ago.

As long as Hasselhoff doesn't plan a similar revival we can all sleep soundly in our beds, apart from maybe a few residents/fans in the remoter regions of Bavaria.

Spring It On

Spring kind of announced itself at the weekend with a brief blast of sunny weather, which has now been followed by a downpour to remind everybody that British weather is as decisive as a Welshman in a sheep pen - speaking of which...

With Spring, traditionally flowers bloom and lambs frolic in the fields. Another take on this pastoral scene is whereby our very own Welshman, the Daffodil tends to 'bloom' upon seeing the frolics of lambs and sheep whether in fields, magazines and on television or even seemingly innocent internet websites.

Sushi Express

Our resident 'plant' specialist, Gatititata is taking herbal carriage to new levels of subterfuge. Due to depart for Spain this weekend, she has been commissioned by none other than Miss Uzu to transport what to the untrained eye, looks like packets of pressed nori seaweed sheets, used in making sushi.

In the hands of a more innocent traveller this wouldn't normally arouse suspicion, but any packet of flat green sheets of organic material in the hands of Gatititata deserves closer inspection given her reputation. Using authentic packaging covered in Japanese kanji and price stickers from a well known Japanese supermarket in London, this is a deceptive ruse to baffle Alicante Airport Security (most of whom probably think Nori Sushi is the name of a giant panda bear in Madrid Zoo).

Star Wars Building Services

El Pepino is currently in training to be the DIY equivalent of a Jedi Knight in Spain - he definitely needs use of the 'Force' to help finish his house by the next millennium on this evidence...

El Pepino's Unfinished Masonry, Opus no.1 in A flat major (repairs required)

This project has been going on for over a year and there is no end in sight. Each morning he undertakes Jedi training in a bid to speed the work-rate but as this picture shows, it is to no avail:

El Pepino practises the 'Force' (unsuccessfully - he's supposed to be levitating the toilet)
